With one of the most tongue twisting casting scenarios ever, Warner Brothers Pictures and director Zack Snyder have cast Diane Lane as Superman’s adoptive earth mother Martha Kent.  Regarding the selection, Zack Snyder stated; “This was a very important piece of casting for me because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman. We are thrilled to have Diane in the role because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination.”  The talented actress is an Academy Award nominee and has an association with Superman, in addition to having the same last name as the superheroe’s love interest/coworker.  Diane starred in Hollywoodland, a film about the mysterious death of Adventures of Superman star George Reeves.  The choice of Diane Lane certainly skews on the younger version of Martha Kent, as seen in graphic novels Superman Birthright and Superman: Earth One.  Whether either of these stories feature into the film’s plot is unknown, but I wouldn’t bet against the possibility.  Diane Lane is an accomplished actress, and I have no doubt she can give a great performance in this role.  If this level of quality casting continues, Superman fans will have quite the gift courtesy of Zack Snyder come the holidays of 2012.
