Warner Brothers and Zack Snyder should officially change Sunday’s to Super – Sunday’s.  Most of the major casting announcements for this film have come on a Sunday.  A mere 2 weeks after Amy Adams had been appointed the new Lois Lane, Warner Brothers and Zack Snyder have announced that actor Michael Shannon is set to play General Zod, Superman’s Kryptonian enemy.  Commenting on the decision Zack Snyder indicated that, “Zod is not only one of Superman’s most formidable enemies, but one of the most significant because he has insights into Superman that others don’t. Michael is a powerful actor who can project both the intelligence and the malice of the character, making him perfect for the role.”  Some of the actor’s previous roles include films such as Vanilla Sky, Pearl Harbor, and the television series Boardwalk Empire.  While I have never seen Michael Shannon act he has been nominated for an Academy Award for his role in Revolutionary Road. The actor joins this cast, that is already full of Academy Award Nominee’s and winners.

Now, I can already hear the message board community whining about the choice of the villain.  I can see comments such as, “oh no, not him again. He’s been overused, and this will be another nod to the Donner films.”  To those people, I say two things. 1. GET OVER IT! 2. YOU’RE WRONG! General Zod last appeared on the big screen in 1980, and the small screen on Smallville.  Both Superman II and Smallville’s Zod were basically the same take on the character at different points in his life.  The character appeared in the comics long before his appearance in live action, so it’s possible to get a fresh and new interpretation of Zod by looking at other source material.  Also, Chris Nolan and David Goyer used The Joker in The Dark Knight, which was a very different portrayal then Tim Burton’s version in 1989. So why can’t the same thing be done with General Zod? We’ll find out when the Man of Steel hits the big screen in December 2012. (Source: Warner Brothers)
