Mere days after announcing that Ben McKenzie will portray Jim Gordon on the Fox television series “Gotham”, the network has announced that 4 other roles have been filled. Two major roles include, Oswald Cobblepot a.k.a. The Penguin, and Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce Wayne’s primary care giver and butler. Two other roles cast include GCPD Captain Essen, and Jim Gordon’s wife, Barbara Kean.
Oswald Cobblepot, more widely known as The Penguin, will be played by actor Robin Lord Taylor (The Walking Dead). The character is described as; “a low-level psychopath for gangster Fish Mooney, and hides his sadistic lust for power behind an exquisitely polite demeanor. He also has the brains of a chess grandmaster and the morals of a jackal.”
Alfred Pennyworth will be portrayed by actor Sean Pertwee (Camelot, Elementary, Equilibrium). The character is described as a “tough-as-nails ex-marine from East London, Pennyworth has loyally served the Wayne family. Now, in the wake of their tragic deaths, he’s fiercely protective of the young Bruce Wayne — the boy who will eventually become Batman.”
Actress Zabryna Guevara (Burn Notice) will portray Captain Essen. Presumably this character is in fact Sarah Essen, who’s most notable comic book appearance came in Frank Miller’s graphic novel “Batman: Year One.” For the show, the character is described as; “Detective Gordon’s boss at the Gotham City Police Department Homicide Squad. Essen balances the two worlds of police and politics with a Machiavellian skill that’s as much corporate litigator as cop.”
Jim Gordon’s fiancée, Barbara Kean will be portrayed by actress Erin Richards (Misfits). This character is described as, a sophisticated emergency doctor, Kean stands by her husband amid the corrupt world of Gotham.”
Donal Logue (Sons of Anarchy), who was at one point rumored for the role of Jim Gordon himself, has instead been cast as Detective Harvey Bullock. The character is described as Jim Gordon’s “rough-around-the-edges partner and mentor. Plays loose with police procedure, but he gets results… and he does it with old-school, forceful panache.”
The role of the young Bruce Wayne has either yet to be cast, or yet to be formally announced. The series comes from producer Bruno Heller (The Mentalist, Rome) He wrote the script for the pilot episode, which will be directed by Danny Cannon (The Tomorrow People, Nikita).
